Lady likes to tell people that she was a little Harriet Potter when she was born. The result of an unstable relationship between a cabaret dancer and a barely known Vegas magician, her birth could actually be considered a "miracle of life". Her mother contemplated abortion many a time, but saw an opportunity to change her life with the baby. Just...not in the way most mothers do.
More than a dancer, her mother's performances often involved "extra" services. One of her regulars was a wealthy man, a casino tycoon with whom she'd maintained a "business" relationship for many years. Upon falling pregnant, Tanya, Lady's mother, decided that if she'd have her life ruined by a child, it had better pay off.
For many months, she led the man to believe that the child in her womb was his. Of course, he didn't care about Tanya, but the Narcissus in him couldn't resist the lure of another piece of him walking around. He would never leave his wife and children, but that pleased Tanya. She was an independent person, with an end goal of making it big--by which she meant, getting rich at any cost.
A deal was struck with the man, in which a luxurious apartment was to be purchased in her name, along with a hefty monthly sum to see to the child's needs. In exchange, she'd keep out of their lives and give up the child's claim over the estate. Unfortunately for Tanya, the man's wife wasn't a fool. The fraud was discovered eight months into her pregnancy and it all came tumbling down.
Threatened with criminal lawsuits, she was run out of the city, never to return again. Too late to get rid of the baby, Tanya carried her pregnancy to term before leaving town for good. With only a few days of life, Lady was dropped off in a basket at her father's doorstep with nothing more than a note from her mother, explaining the situation. See? Harriet Potter.
Her father, Marlon, was a good man, but also weak and irresponsible. With no knowledge of the pregnancy, he questioned the veracity of his paternity. He had no structure to welcome a baby into his life--not a proper residence, not a proper neighborhood, no savings on his month-to-month living. Yet when faced with the opportunity, he simply could not give up his daughter.
He cleaned up his act (as much as he could). The first few months were tragicomical, but the duo made do. Envisioning a great future in entertainment for his child, Marlon named the baby "Lady" taking his last name "Roman". "Lady Roman, it's a stage name in itself." Often, however, Lady wondered if that was just a measure for Marlon's short memory spells. "Hey, Lady" was easy enough to remember.
An entertainer she grew up to be. Extroverted, Lady appeared to always be excited to be in the world. Her father was no fool and took advantage of that quality since she was young. She was often included in the small-time cons he pulled to keep them both afloat, aside from his kinda steady job as an illusionist.
It wasn't until many years later that Lady realized the "game" her father had her playing with him wasn't really a game at all. Still, what was the harm? Tourists, rich people who wouldn't miss the fifty bucks they lost here and there. But to them, it put food on the table.
If it didn't hurt anyone, what was the harm? That became Lady's life motto. A little shoplifting for the perfect pair of jeans? It didn't hurt anyone. Seducing the manager for a free meal? Who would it hurt? Taking tourists on faux tours of the rich and famous? They loved it.
Rules became guidelines when it came to Lady. It wasn't that her morals were murky, exactly, it was that society was wack. They built a system set up for people like her to fail. The way she saw it, she was simply evening the score. This attitude carried on with her into her adult life, even after her father passed away in a tragic on-stage accident.
Shy of 14 years old, Lady was sent to live with her paternal grandparents in San Franciso. There, she graduated public high school without many ambitions. Following her father''s trade, Lady works as a magician's assistant on a regular Friday night spot, as well as taking gigs as an entertainer at children's parties, corporate events and themed weddings. She still pulls the eventual con, but it's more a habit than a necessity by now.
- Her name is the combination of Roma's given name and her alias, Lady of Northern Skies.
- Both of their fathers dealt with magic. Roma's was the warlock, Merlyn. Lady's was a Vegas washed-up magician, who taught her all the secrets of the trade.
- Both Roma and Lady deal with magic. Lady grew up to become a magician's assistant (with goals of stepping up into her own show eventually). Roma uses magic to maintain the order of the Multiverse.
- Roma can manipulate reality on a large scale, Lady uses small cons to do so on a small scale.
- Roma is led by a higher duty. Lady has yet to develop altruistic goals, living a rather self-centered existence.
